Our work

Empower the Barrios,

is a humanitarian project that delivers direct food relief to the most vulnerable communities of Medellín. Through separating logistical costs from public donations we invest 97,6% of all public donations into food.

Low food prices through agreements with wholesalers allow us to feed a family for 4 days for 7,52 USD. In close collaboration with other humanitarian projects and social leader networks in Medellín we constantly identify the need for food aid.

Provide food-relief to the most vulnerable barrios of Medellín efficiently and transparently.

Prevent the vulnerable barrios of Medellín from rising hunger and violence. Open-source knowledge, infrastructure and resources to unify humanitarian groups in achieving our common goal.

  • 97,6% Efficiency; Investing 97,6% of every public donation to food.
  • Use local knowledge; Close collaboration with our network of local social leaders.
  • Building bridges and community; Humanitarian aid is not a zero-sum game. Sharing knowledge, infrastructure and connections to other humanitarian projects is key.

Coming up: Educate the Barrios

If people are underfed, they can’t think straight. Let alone create their own opportunities. During the pandemic the food-need surged, so food was the answer.

In Medellín, the sole ability to speak English doubles your minimum wage and creates job opportunities where otherwise there wouldn’t be any.

Empower the Barrios is in the process of preparing a logistical system in which local foundations will:

  • Send their beneficiaries to a location of Empower the Barrios where they follow English language classes.
  • Receive English tutors at their location to provide English language classes to their beneficiaries.

All classes will be following a professional English curriculum.
